Mastering the Hario V60: A Step-by-Step Guide to Perfect Pour-Over Coffee

Mastering the Hario V60: A Step-by-Step Guide to Perfect Pour-Over Coffee

The Hario V60 is a staple in the world of specialty coffee, celebrated for its ability to deliver an exceptionally clean and flavorful cup. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or a casual drinker, learning the proper Hario V60 brewing technique can elevate your coffee experience. One of our wonderful customers shared how pleased they were with our Ethiopian origin coffee in their pour-over.  So we designed to share  a comprehensive guide to brewing the perfect pour-over using our Rimfire Roasters coffee.

What You’ll Need

To get started, gather the following equipment:

  • Hario V60 dripper
  • Paper filter
  • Gooseneck kettle
  • Coffee grinder
  • Digital scale
  • Timer
  • Rimfire Roasters beans
  • Filtered water
  • Mug or server

Step 1: Prepare Your Equipment

  1. Boil Your Water: Heat filtered water to a temperature of 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, let the water sit for about 30 seconds after boiling.
  2. Set Up the V60: Place the Hario V60 on top of your mug or server.
  3. Rinse the Filter: Insert a paper filter into the V60 and rinse it thoroughly with hot water. This removes any papery taste and preheats your equipment. Discard the rinse water.

Step 2: Measure and Grind Your Coffee

  1. Weigh Your Coffee: Use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:16 for optimal flavor. For a single serving, measure 15 grams of coffee for 240 grams (8 oz) of water.
  2. Grind Your Beans: Grind your coffee to a medium-fine consistency, similar to sea salt. A consistent grind ensures even extraction.

Step 3: Bloom the Coffee

  1. Add the ground coffee to the V60 and gently shake it to level the bed.
  2. Start your timer and pour just enough water (approximately 30–40 grams) to saturate the coffee grounds. This process, known as the "bloom," allows gases to escape and sets the stage for proper extraction.
  3. Let the coffee bloom for 30–45 seconds.

Step 4: Begin the Pour

  1. Start pouring water in a slow, steady spiral motion, beginning at the center and moving outward. Avoid pouring directly on the edges of the filter to ensure even saturation.
  2. Add water in stages, maintaining a consistent pouring speed. For a 240-gram brew, aim to complete your pour within 2:30–3:00 minutes.

Step 5: Let It Drip

Allow the water to fully pass through the coffee bed. The total brew time should be approximately 3:30–4:00 minutes, depending on your grind size and pouring technique.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

Once the brewing process is complete, remove the V60 and discard the used filter. Give your coffee a gentle swirl to mix the flavors evenly before serving.

Tips for Success

  • Experiment with Ratios: Adjust the coffee-to-water ratio to suit your taste preferences.
  • Dial In Your Grind: If your brew is too fast, try a finer grind. If it’s too slow, coarsen the grind.
  • Control Your Pour: A gooseneck kettle offers precise control, making it easier to achieve an even pour.

By following these steps, you’ll unlock the full potential of Rimfire Roasters locally fresh coffee, creating a cup that’s vibrant, balanced, and full of flavor. Happy brewing!
